About us

Hi – we’re Andrew & Toni, two fifty-something South African professionals, now living in France.  Five or so years ago we had a mini midlife-crisis and decided to sell up our home, put (very few) belongings in storage, resign our jobs and take a year out to travel through Europe.  We're still on the go more than five years later.

In this blog, we will periodically document (mainly for friends and family) our travels - through photos and the odd commentary – to create a record of our time on the road.

For theFFohFor the first five years we travelled in Bokkie, our 2001 Hymer B584 motorhome, which was lovingly passed on to us (with the right amount of money changing hands) by her previous Australian owners. Although already named Hilton, we quickly started calling the Hymer our ‘Bokwa’ – which, for non-South Africans, is a term we use to describe any vehicle that is like an old wagon, with a large turning circle.  This has since been shortened to ‘Bokkie’ (or little deer), which is also a form of endearment:  ‘Jy is my Bokkie’, loosely translates as: ‘You are my darling’.  She is well kitted out, and should carry us through this year’s travels with the minimum of hiccups (fingers crossed).

Unfortunately it proved too difficult to keep Bokkie in France so we had to pass her on to a new owner for different adventures and we now have a Duster (Dassi) and caravan (Orthos) to continue our travels.  Having French residency means we can do the full six months in Brittany to see through the winters and then travel, camp and house sit our way through the summers.

Follow along if you wish…
