Well, after three flights and more than 24hours of continuous mask-wearing, we finally emerged wearily in Cape Town to spend some time with family, first in Somerset West and now in Stilbaai, along the south coast of the Western Cape.

Stilbaai sits on the banks of the Goukou river |

Stilbaai's beaches rival anything we've seen in Europe

High tides seem to bring out all the crabs, on the roads, in the garden and even one in our bedroom. |

The end of this unfortunate Barbel provided food for the whelks. |
It's a lovely retirement and holiday village and, while the weather has been quite variable, we have been able to make the best of it getting in some good walks, spending lots of time with family and even getting some fishing and a couple of braai's in. Superb!

No matter how much I zoom in, my efforts still only yielded 'modest' results. |
Today, as the weather was a bit wintery with a cold front moving through, we decided to do a bit of a road trip and took the dirt road from Stilbaai to Witsand via Die Puntjie and Vermaaklikheid (love these names) and then on to Heidelberg for some lunch. After that, we headed towards Ladismith in the Klein Karoo and then returned via another dirt road through Van Wyksdorp and back to Riversdale and Stilbaai. The scenery was breath-taking - we were also surprised to see quite a bit of game as a number of private game farms have been established in the area.

Aren't these bontebok gorgeous?

Die Puntjie, a very exclusive destination. We'd never even heard of it before.

This tiny steenbok didn't look pleased to see us

The bird life here is amazing - red bishop in the reeds |
