Mountain Zebra Park

 Monday 08/11/21

We left Stilbaai early yesterday morning and made our first stop in George to pick up some supplies.  We then took the Outeniqua pass for a much quicker trip through the mountains than the Montagu pass we used on the way to Addo.

We followed the same route as the last trip as far as Willowmore, where we headed East last time.  This time our route led us north to Graaff-Reinet, through the very dry Eastern Cape. We were struck by the image of the Beervlei dam: it's now a huge concrete dam wall holding back a dry, dusty bowl devoid of any water. Sadly we could not take a photo at the time.

We spotted this interesting couple last time we passed through but couldn't stop
so we snapped a few pics this time.

Stunning views from the Naude's pass

The final stretch of the journey, between Graaff-Reinet and Cradock was simply stunning.  We entered the park and were soon welcomed by a few Mountain Zebra, smaller and 'stripier' than their northern cousins we are used to seeing.

Grazing is very sparse, this Hartebees was quite skinny
Hopefully the rains will help

We're booked into a chalet for two nights as it started raining early this morning and it set to continue all day.  It should clear from tomorrow so we'll relocate to the campsite and pitch our tent.  We're not complaining, rain is desperately needed here and we are enjoying chilling for the day - we also have a lovely fire going!
