Near Noyal-Muzillac - Enjoying the last of summer

Sunday 08/09/19

Salut!

Toni and I have started trying to learn a little French to ease our way into the next six months and it isn't easy.  The pronunciation seems to bear no resemblance to the written word and, although the app tells us we are doing really well, I am not sure how often we will need to speak about dogs, cats or horses in our daily lives...

Still, if we don't start somewhere we'll never get the hang of it.

I'm thinking of dropping the fence and letting them mow the lawn.

We have also managed to explore the local area a bit, both by bike and using Bokkie as our car.  We combined a grocery run to nearby Muzillac with a visit to the lovely seaside village of Penn Lann.

We have had our first proper experience of the French road rule 'La priorité à droite' where vehicles to your right have priority.  Largely phased out in most areas, some regions still use the system where many intersections have no lines or signs and you can find yourself driving down a main road and having to stop every time cars pop in from the right hand side.  It took one near miss, angry hooting and a gesticulating Frenchman for me to twig; I will need to keep my wits about me!

On Sunday we popped into Vannes, a picturesque walled city about 40 minutes drive from where we are.  They have a market every Sunday so we couldn't resist going for a look.  We have so much fresh produce from the garden at the moment so didn't really need anything, but it was nice to get out and about.

Apart from that we have been enjoying the weather; it is quite chilly overnight and cool if overcast, but the sun has a real warmth to it when it appears, something we really missed in the UK.  We are spending a lot of time outdoors  and are really enjoying it here.  The garden is keeping us very busy, but it's great to have a project to do.

We leave again on Thursday, it will be a wrench to leave the cats, especially Jasper the kitten who has crawled into our hearts -  but we'll be back in October.
