Salema day trip to Sagres

Tuesday 12/02/19

It was windy last night and the fact that we are parked under a eucalyptus tree means we were continuously peppered with seeds dropping from the trees.  This accompanied with an annoying mosquito in Bokkie meant we didn't get a very good night's sleep.

Regardless, we set off in the morning on our bikes to Sagres, 17 km away.  As usual, the first few hills really made us wonder why we do it but once the muscles settled into a rhythm things improved.  The hilly terrain suddenly flattened out to reveal Sagres in the distance, and soon we arrived.  The area is amazing, the land seems to have been chopped off into the Atlantic; it just shears away forming great cliffs that are gradually being eaten by the sea.

I hadn't noticed the fisherman in blue on the cliffs until I say the photo

We toured around the town a bit and had a drink (hot chocolate, not alcohol!) but didn't want to stay too long as the wind was forecast to increase as the day wore on and we knew we were going back straight into a headwind.

The return trip was exhausting but we stopped along the way to eat our packed lunch, which gave us a chance to recover.  For fun we bought a few groceries at a nearby Lidl and packed these in our rucksacks to add to the challenge of getting tired legs home.

I'd say the distance was just right today with the wind - if we had to cycle a few more kilometers at the end we would have struggled.  It worked out well, and pleasing to feel that we are definitely getting stronger every time.

Back at camp we had lovely hot showers and started to prepare Bokkie for moving on tomorrow.  We've really enjoyed our stay at Salema, and visiting the surrounding areas - it's a lovely mix of nature, woods, sea and picture perfect villages.
