Arromanches-les-Bains

Tuesday 20/08/19

We had another lovely drive today, skipping around the toll roads and taking the longer (time-wise) route really does pay dividends.  We had to make a short detour through some narrow country roads when our route was blocked by a truck that was wider than the road, but with so little traffic it wasn't really a problem for Bokkie (and it adds to the adventure!)

We arrived on the Normandy coast to find we were certainly not the only ones visiting - it is very busy.  Not only is it still European summer holidays but it is also the 75'th anniversary of the D-Day landings so there are hordes of tourists.  The first aire we tried to get into near Juno beach was completely full,  so we moved on to a paid area near Gold beach which, while also very busy, still had spaces.

Bokkie is somewhere in the masses

Looking out over Arromanches with the remains of the 'Operation Mulberry' harbour walls still showing in the bay.
This is the harbour floated out from Britain to back up the landing invasion.

The 75'th anniversary sculpture

Stunning figures made up of small round washers.

Minimalist fishing vessel!

It is absolutely bustling here with people coming and going non-stop.  We took a walk around and down into the village which is lovely, a very thought-provoking area of Europe and it gives one a real sense of history, and the scale of the war effort from the Allies during WWII, during the D-day landings.

We're very pleased to have seen this, and will probably move on to a more quiet setting tomorrow.
