Stella Plage

Sunday 18/08/19

Bokkie and her crew are happy to be back in the land of cheaper diesel and wine; we were down to our last bottle of French wine and had resisted buying any in the UK!

On the beach at Stella Plage
It was bittersweet leaving the house sit as usual, we loved the house and the animals but we always start getting itchy feet towards the end of the time.  Our hosts arrived back yesterday evening so, after handing over to them we spent the night in Bokkie sheltering in their barn.  This morning we headed out early to the Lidl in Folkestone to do a final shop for some english essentials (groceries are actually quite expensive in France and there are a few things we battle to get there) and headed on to Dover.  Our timings all worked out perfectly in spite of us taking one (fairly major) wrong turning and a section of the M20 closed for road works, luckily we always build enough time into our plans.

The white cliffs come into view as we drive into Dover.
Cars onto the upper deck, motorbikes and bicycles first onto the lower deck
followed by the lorries and then us motorhomes.

Making our way onto the ferry.

Saying goodbye to the UK for a few weeks - hope they let us back in again...
Bokkie getting ready to invade France again.

The ferry terminal is very easy to navigate, they do so many crossing here that they have it down to a fine art.  Boarding was very quick and we popped onto the stern deck to watch us depart but the wind made us retreat back indoors quite quickly.  The crossing was very smooth in spite of the wind and much quicker across this narrow stretch of water.

Disembarking was even faster and in no time at all we were on the French road system, travelling on the correct side of the road according to Bokkie.

We're tucked in behind the dunes and are somewhat sheltered from the strong onshore wind whipping off the channel.  We went for a long walk along the beach and watched all the kite-surfers enjoying the conditions but we were happy to return to our shelter after our sand-blasting.

Tomorrow we will continue our route down to Brittany, we are due at the next house-sit on Sunday, (we really like this combination of travel and house-sitting as a great way to 'live' in different places) so will see where the roads take us.

Bonus pic, interesting artwork on the side of a building as we entered Dover...
