Celorico da Beira

Thursday 14/03/19

Bokkie doesn't quite know what has hit her as she has travelled further since leaving the house-sit than she did in the three weeks before it.  With Toni's toe in healing mode we have decided to make the best of it and get moving with our trip to Nice.  It has meant we missed out on some of the cities we had planned to visit, but we will be back.

We were due to spend Wednesday night near Coimbra but turned to the Atlantic for a last look and spent the night on the coast at São Pedro de Moel.  There was more evidence along the road of the terrible fires Portugal has had in the past few years with huge areas of plantation burned.  We had quite a gale blowing from the North which covered Bokkie in sea spray and buffeted her until it died down later in the night.

Burnt out forests as far as the eye can see

We went for a walk in the morning and the waves were still raging against the shore; it was quite something to see.

After breakfast, we headed inland and Portugal continued to amaze us as we travelled through the most fantastic scenery.  As much as we love the coast, the interior is a really special place and we had an enjoyable drive today.

Please excuse the quality of photos taken through the windscreen
as the chips and reflections sometimes distort it a bit

Now we are perched in a hilltop village looking out over the landscape and have been for a gentle walk to the castle.

Tomorrow we continue our journey northwards and will soon be leaving Portugal.  It has really captivated us.
