Pamplona

Wednesday 20/03/19

Bokkie is having a well-earned rest just outside Pamplona in Basque country.

After a rough night with heavy rain on Tuesday we were hoping to outrun the weather on our journey inland but it followed us.  We had planned on filling up with some cheap fuel and also doing grocery shopping in Bilboa, but found out at the last minute that Tuesday was a public holiday and most of the shops were closed.  We drove through the rain for most of the way and, although it was dry when we arrived the rain had caught up by the evening.

We popped out to walk around the area a bit and met a lovely Welsh couple in the motor-home parked in front of us.  With Toni's toe still very sore we decided to restrict our walking and planned to cycle into Pamplona on Wednesday morning, forecast as sunny but quite cold.

The morning arrived with strong winds and we almost decided to skip the city and move on, cycling in the biting cold and strong winds wasn't very attractive.  Luckily we decided to to tough it out as it ended up being a lovely day.  We spent a good amount of time sitting in the square listening to a pair busking, they were super-talented.

The city has a relaxed feeling (when there aren't any bulls running) and the old town is quite small, so we didn't have to walk too far.  We're enjoying the sunshine, after three days the constant rain was beginning to grind us down a bit.  We do miss the warmth that we had down south; it is still very wintery here.

Tomorrow we'll move to our final Spanish stop before crossing the Pyrenees into France.
