East Fleet & Chesil Beach

Chesil Beach
29km long, 15m high and made of 100 million tonnes of pebbles, Chesil justifiably warrants the name, 'Big Beach'!

According to local information, the beach is highly dynamic, still moving inland at about 5 metres per century due to storm overwash.  The pebbles grade in size from pea gravel in the west to potato sized cobbles in the east.  Local folklore has it that on foggy nights fishermen or smugglers were able to tell which part of the beach they had landed on by the shingle size.

It's an impressive beach, and formed the guide for our coastal walk this afternoon - after a morning spent doing 'Bokkie chores'.  One thing we both agree on - our camping mugs (still bought in South Africa) and hot water flask are essential travel companions for us; there's something special about a hot cuppa on a walk or a cycle.

This must be heaven for bees (or hell, not sure)

You can't beat a nice cuppa on a walk!

Tomorrow we're going to tackle the Portland Isle by bicycle - it should be another good day!
