Woolacombe Beach

 Sunday 02/05/21

We had a utility day yesterday, doing some washing, tidying up and trying out our new rotary washing line.  It was quite cold and windy but we managed a quick walk in the hills in the afternoon, just to keep the legs moving.

The rolling hills of Devon

Today the outlook was better so we packed a flask of hot water, coffee kit and some lunch and cycled (freewheeled) down to Woolacombe.  We arrived around 09:30 and were surprised at how busy the car-park and beach were already, the Brits aren't usually early risers on a weekend.  Prime spots had been secured and people were streaming down to the beach for the best weather of the bank holiday weekend.

The beach was still relatively quiet early on

Everyone with a campervan or motorhome bagged the best spots

One of the lovely secluded beaches

We locked up the bikes and headed off along the cliff paths and then veered inland for a lovely walk with views over the coast.  it turned out to be quite a steep walk but the views definitely made it worthwhile.  On the way back we headed for one of the secluded beaches we had spotted earlier and sat on the rocks having a lunch break.  By the time we returned to the main beach it had certainly filled up, the forecast for tomorrow is quite grim so people were determined to make the most of the sunshine.

Lovely views on our walk

Approaching Mortehoe

Even the sheep were enjoying the sunshine

Our quiet spot for lunch, the steep access seemed to put most people off

The beach was much busier by the time we returned

We then tackled the steep ride back, our legs have certainly had a workout in Woolacombe but we've enjoyed every minute of our stay here - and just being able to head for long walks, cycles and runs, while also having time to just laze about and cook good food.  It's really great to finally be out of lockdown, and feel a sense of normality returning! Long may it last.

Tomorrow we head off to Dorset; it looks like a couple of days of high winds and rain but hopefully things will calm down before too long.
