Carnac

Wednesday 17/06/20

Last night we knew we should get a good view of the sunset, albeit only after our usual bedtime, so we got permission to stay up late and watch.  Early signs were looking  good as there was just enough cloud to make it interesting.

Our view from the front seats

We sat and watched through Bokkie's giant windscreen, a wonderful end to a lovely day.

Going, going...

Today Bokkie is tucked into an aire adjacent to an ancient site of the largest collection of megalithic stones in the world.  There are more than 3,000 stones organised over an area of almost 4 miles.  The stones were erected at some stage during the Neolithic period, probably around 3300 BC, but some may date to as early as 4500 BC.

There are many myths surrounding the stones, and local tradition claims that the reason they stand in such perfectly straight lines is that they are a Roman legion turned to stone by the magician, Merlin!  Whatever their significance, they were worth seeing.

Toni made me stand there...

We walked around the site and then continued into the village of Carnac where took the opportunity to view the church interior.

When we arrived this morning the aire was quite full with motorhomes parked on both sides of the area.  Bokkie pulled in between them and we went off for our walk.  When we returned, things had re-organised for some reason.

Lone English van to the North, entire French fleet to the South, dark clouds looming overhead.  We are trying to figure it out; maybe we missed a memo but so it has carried on all afternoon.  There is one other van in alliance with us, the rest are squeezing into fewer and fewer available gaps in the South.  We might need to sleep with Bokkie's alarm on tonight...
