Mayet to Oradour-sur-Glane

We have pitch-side seats to Saturday afternoon football.  We watched the young ’uns earlier but the senior boys’ match on now is an altogether more serious affair.  Toni picked this Aire yesterday and purely by chance it is one of the villages I wanted to visit, having read about it on other travel blogs.  We are in Oradour-sur-Glane, site of the Martyr Village where SS troops murdered virtually the entire village population in 1944. Much of what remained of the destroyed village has been preserved and it makes sombre viewing, especially on a grey Autumn day like today.

The journey down was fairly uneventful, we started off quite early and were treated to a spectacular sunrise but it soon clouded over and we drove in rain for most of the day. A long stretch was off-motorway on more rural roads to get to the village.  Unfortunately the services are all shut at the Aire due to winter freezing so we will have to find water elsewhere tomorrow to fill up our tank. We should be fine for the night as we still have enough water and power, and we emptied our grey and black water in Mayet.

We were lucky to have a well-timed break in the weather and decided to walk through the new village to visit the memorial site. It was eerily quiet, and very unnerving to walk through street upon street, all  houses burned out and poignant reminders of the lives that were lost everywhere. For anyone interested, it's worth googling and reading the history.

The second half of the senior boys’ footie will start soon, Toni is cooking and I will try to sort out our ageing computer.  We are finding most camping related sites and services are long closed for the winter in France so are hoping to get to warmer areas soon.
